Hiking Advice

Red Rock climbing around Las Vegas.

Here are some important hiking tips for your adventures around the Las Vegas desert. Las Vegas has a wonderland choice of trails and routes to explore, so get your backpack and set forth on your journey. Have fun out there, stay alert, don't forget your camera and most of all your compass!

Top Ten Tips

1) Carry plenty of water and drink it often. The recommended amount of water per day is a gallon. Do not trust that all spring waters are completely safe to drink.

2) Desert trails may involve steep hills and rough terrain. Do not take on more than you can handle and know your limits.

3) Look for signs of heat exhaustion such as red bumps, nausea, red skin, fatigue and dizziness.

4) Do not go alone. Stay in groups or with a partner.

5) Know the weather forecast before you head out on your journey. You don't want to be in the middle of the desert when a thunderstorm hits.

6) Wear solid walking shoes that can handle the travel, take sunglasses and wear long pants so you can avoid scratches when climbing.

7) Carry a first aid kit with you.

8) Be aware of snakes and insects. Make sure you are cautious when you are sticking your hand in small crevices and holes when exploring.

9) Don't play or feed the animals. In some areas it is illegal and could cost you a fine.

10) Follow the Outdoorsmen Code: Take photos and leave only footprints.
